Based on my experience, indicated above are the things one should do as an apprentice during site inspection. | As an apprentice, it is always a privilege to learn something new. And to catch as much knowledge as we can get, it is our duty to participate and avail ourselves to different tasks. Last April 11, 2017 in the afternoon, we were able to do our first site visit. To be able to go outside the office walls, and to witness the actual construction on site was another whole experience for me, together with Patricia Ecat. It is a kind of exposure where most apprentices from different companies are not able to encounter. And to take part with such opportunity, we consider ourselves fortunate. With only a week of working at ConcipioTektura, were given the chance to observe how work on site is. Ar. Eric Baño appointed Patricia and me, Katrin Francisco, to go to UCCP Ellinwood Malate Church where the Toilet Renovation is being held and to have a look on the ongoing project. When we were there, he stated to us what we had to do before he and the general contractor starts discussing. |
Always bring a notebook and pen with you because whatever important details discussed must be written down. This includes the what, when, who,and how. What: “What will be the next tasks for the construction?” “What are the things that need to be polished and rectified?” When: “When will the task supposed to be completed?” Who: “Who is responsible for the task?” And How “How will the task be done”, which includes the exact details needed. That is why, in order to obtain the necessary data, paying attention is a must. As an example, at the site, Ar. Eric instructed Mr. Lito Ligarya, the general contractor (who), to rectify the exterior corners of the wall tiles (what)—applying 2 mm grout (how), with both agreeing that by April 12, it is finished (when). It is also important to hold your cameras and take photos. While listening, take pictures of the things that are included on the listed tasks. Cope up with the discussion and photograph evidence with you. Once everything is settled, and important information is gathered, you are good to do the Site Inspection Report. |
This whole experience has solidified my passion to the architectural and construction field. It has given me a brand new perspective to the industry I am about to take. Realizing that for only one week, I was able to encounter different lessons, knowledge that can never be obtained inside the university. Education will always be more accurate on the world outside the walls of the classrooms. The benefit of doing tasks firsthand is making that one step closer to develop myself as a future architect.
