“Who among here wants to be an Architect? Please raise your hands...”
Almost 90% of them raised their hands then, I asked a follow up question
“Among those who raised their hands; who among you will be driven enough to set up their own practice?”
Now some of them were reluctant and only around 70% raised their hands.
I told them the reality...
“Do you know that not all of you will become an architect? Some will settle for different jobs and even profession. Some will consider it as a secondary option. Some will not fulfill it. And some will be frustrated.”
I told them as a fact and as a personal experience of mine. I have classmates who are good, top of my class and even finished a degree in architecture but they didn’t pursue the practice of architecture. Some became a restaurateur, a professional dancer, a call center agent, a gas filling attendant, a flight attendant and etc.
From the two words of my subject title “In the PURSUIT of PASSION for Architecture” I want to engage my listeners on those subjects.
First, the word PURSUIT, what comes in our mind when we hear this? Follow, Chase, Hunt, Trail, Search, Quest, Tracking & Practice
What about the other word PASSION, it’s a Fervor, Zeal, Excitement, Obsession, Enthusiasm, Ardour & Love
Those words help us to establish the foundation in which we want to practice Architecture.
Part of our MISSION is to inspire young achievers in the field of architecture. I gave them a FORESIGHT, the ability to predict or needed in the future; for them to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.
And I shared with them my HINDSIGHT the recognition of the realities and mistakes after its occurrence that can give us wisdom and knowledge.
I proposed in my class the 3 V’s Vehicle, Values and Vision.
First V is Vehicle - A means of transport to your destination
You may have a vehicle but you need someone to drive it. So I suggest that to fulfill this 3 V’s you need to have a DRIVE
In the book Drive, written by Daniel H. Pink.
“He argues that human motivation is largely intrinsic, and that the aspects of this motivation can be divided into autonomy, mastery and purpose. He argues against old models of motivation driven by rewards and fear of punishment, dominated by extrinsic factors such as money.”[i]
Yes extrinsic factors like security, money and necessity are motivators to a degree, but to be truly motivated to practice architecture is to find self-fulfillment within and for it to fill a purpose in life.
In Vehicle, I gave the 3 basic transports that we are normally having, namely:
- Education –Basic Foundation
- Certification – Validation of Acquired Foundation
- Experience – Exposure on Realities
Second V is Values - What it’s important to you that gives you a reason to reach your destination.
May I suggest 5 points that I consider most people will also value. It can be more or less for some people.
- God – For God’s glory
- Other people – People Focus
- Time – Opportunity & Occasion
- Talent – Skills & Creativity
- Treasure – Rewards
Lastly the 3rd V is Vision - Visual fulfillment of your dream
A foresight of your dream to be an Architect and to practice Architecture
- Dream – Opening your mind to limitless possibilities
- Objectives – Progressive Steps and Chapters in Life
- Purpose – Our reason in Life
May these inspire the young ones and the architects alike for fulfilling the practice of Architecture.
May God bless us all and serve our purpose in His name. Thank you very much!

PS:
I would like to give thanks to Arch. Allan Lompot for inviting me in his class to give an introduction and inspirational talk on the practice of architecture.
