The most classic misconception of people about being an architect is that, Architects only do drawings, but in fact, it is a very complex profession, architecture can be a little bit of everything. As someone pursuing architecture, you have to see yourself as a person with multiple careers; this job can be a pinch and mix of the jobs of an engineer, an accountant, an entrepreneur, a service worker, a lawyer, a doctor, a designer, and of a construction worker. But let me tell you something, all this profession, and as well as being an architect, constantly, requires a common skill--to be able to sell yourself just like a salesman— and being given the opportunity to participate as an apprentice of Concipio Tektura in a presentation for a big hotel and gaming company has strengthen my thoughts on this idea. |
Winding back the clock to what happened yesterday, I gathered some pointers to effectively sell yourself to the clients in a minimalist Concipio Tektura manner:
- Corporate people are often very busy people, and might not have enough time to entertain you, so you should predict their varying availability, and make your time and attendance flexible to their demands. Architecture is a service-oriented work.
- Be eager and foresee any problems you may encounter, such as force majeure and even typical human misfortunes.
- Know your Client. Be mindful of their possible extent of arms in business information and company backgrounds, make sure you know what you are talking about.
- Anticipate the client’s possible “objections” to what you’re selling and know how to counterattack these objections. (Just like how Concipio Tektura presented the company, bringing up the negatives about the company and letting the client see the useful advantages of these negative qualities.)
- Build relationships: Asking simple and polite questions which are not related to business can help you be at ease with your client, vice-versa and at the same time lighten up the conversation.
- Show your clients that you are capable for their endeavor because Architecture is your passion and expertise. Challenge them to trust your company because you are capable and you have the credentials and experience. Let them understand what principles you believe in and what your company is all about.
