Apprentice of Concipio Tektura
A professor of mine once said that the things you learn from school is only fifty percent of what you need to learn to fully understand architecture. The other fifty percent you can attain through your experience. This is the reason why architects have to undertake apprenticeship to fill the gap in the knowledge of the field between theory and practice.Right now, I am taking up an apprenticeship program that is challenging the things I have learned. It already countered my own design process with the first task I have received. I have been asked to do a 3-D model representation of a concept sketch of a shopping mall. I had a hard time starting this task simply because the process needed to finish is is contrary to what I have been trained to do. I began the task by finding the right proportions from the clues left in the sketch. With the help of my mentor, I found out that you can already tell how tall the building is by observing the number of partitions in the curtain wall. But not all of the details were in the concept sketch I was given and I needed to imagine the unclear details in order to finish the model. The next thing I needed to do was the presentation of the shopping mall model by providing an entourage and a background. I also had a hard time doing this right due to the fact that my rendering skills were limited since I previously used software that did it for me. But when I presented the rendered model to my mentor, I was asked to change things that were beyond the software’s capabilities. That is the reason why I had to learn another way to accomplish the task. After I finished the model and presentation of the shopping mall, my mentor explained that after this, it now has to be understood by clients or layman by presenting the drawing using a concept board. In that board it holds ideas that will interpret its design. I patterned the layout and design of the board to the firm’s standard. This task completely put me out of my comfort zone and broke my traditions by making me use software and specific techniques for the first time. It is a new experience and I think I learned a lot not only in the field of architecture but other fields that are associated with it. I even also learned things I need to know in practicing the knowledge I have about architecture and are lessons I will able to apply as I continue to grow as an architect.
