Architecture school has taught me a lot in terms of theories, principles, and laws in designing structures and livable spaces. When I started working as an intern in Concipio Tektura, a total of four years learning in school was just a small portion of what is in the real field of Architecture. There are so much more to learn in this profession, and choosing the right firm and mentor to guide us in our career path is crucial to our growth as an aspiring architect. During the earlier weeks of working at the firm, I thought our task would focus more on Computer Aided works like how other interns from different firms have told me. But I was surprised and excited when our first tasks focused on the project management, part of the project. Every experience was a glimpse of the reality of Architecture, from making phone calls and sending e-mails to every possible supplier to making simplified specification, and Bill of Quantities and Bid Tabulation. These tasks were very new to me, and every progress and mistakes that we made were guided and corrected by our mentor. We were taught a lot of things that we didn’t learn from Architecture school and we were treated as a learner and aspiring architects. | © Concipio Tektura Architectural Design Studio |
© Concipio Tektura Architectural Design Studio While on the seventh week of our internship, we were given the chance to witness an actual client meeting together with other architects, engineers, suppliers and contractors involved in the project. I learned how different professions work in harmony to produce a quality of work in a restricted amount of time. We met other engineers who work as project managers and gave us advice while having a quick tour around the site. He mentioned how connections and relationships with our co-workers are important to our profession, and respecting laborers as much as other professions are important in the workplace. © Concipio Tektura Architectural Design Studio After a few weeks of working, I was given an opportunity to work on an on-going project and design the Guest bedroom and Children’s bedroom. In this task, I was able to apply the knowledge and skills that I have gained from architecture school. While working on the project, I have become more aware of the materials used for designing and constructing furniture and other cabinets and its mechanisms. In the process, I had the chance to review the standards of designing ergonomic furniture and learn how to construct it. After designing the bedrooms, we were tasked to render each view of the bedrooms to software called Vray, Using this rendering software for the first time was a very frustrating moment, knowing that only a few people use it in my school. But it was a great experience to learn new skills to improve the quality of work that we produce. It was a great opportunity to work on a project wherein the clients are involved in designing the living spaces in their house. The feeling of being able to influence the thoughts and soon to be the experience of the clients through our proposed designs was very gratifying and for that, I am very thankful for my mentor.

As I began my first day in Concipio Tektura with my co-apprentices, doing the Kitchen Design was assigned to me. My mentor, Arch. Baño explained to me what should be done on my assigned task, he said that I will be using AutoCad for its detailed drawings and after that; we’ll have collaboration for its 3D Modelling by the use of Sketch Up and V-ray. When I heard those, the first thoughts that come to my mind is, “Can I finish this work properly and with satisfying outcome? I don’t have enough idea how to work on those software’s”. And so, to solve these problems, I searched and asked my co-apprentices on how to work using AutoCad. Furthermore, when I start creating its 3D model and rendering using V-ray, since I don’t have experience using it, Arch. Baño helped me by letting me know the things to remember when rendering and encouraged me to be diligent when working on the tasks given to me. As my task in doing kitchen design goes on, I encountered a lot of problems and at the same time, I found new knowledge about detailing. I become more aware that in using/creating sizes for kitchen appliances in a drawing, I should know that it must be based on sizes available in the market. Moreover, when it comes to its specifications, I must know if those can be done or match the available and exact real materials. On the other hand, while doing the 3D modelling, I had hard time creating it as a realistic model. To help me, my mentor consulted the 3D model that I’m working on and gave me ideas on how to properly work on it and solve my problem. As I continued doing the kitchen details and 3D model with the ideas given to me by my mentor, I was able to let myself know the things that I didn’t know before and when I was just starting my apprenticeship. I also can say that my apprenticeship on Concipio Tektura has helped me improved on the things that I lack ever since studying Architecture and gave another step on making myself prepared to be a future Architect. Thank you Sir Baño! |
