We were his students on his Architectural Interiors class in Polytechnic University of the Philippines when we first met him. The warning was set, saying that the upcoming days were going to be tough. Indeed, they were tough. Together with the other major subjects under the program of BS Architecture, it was really a hard dilemma of choosing what to prioritize. But one thing was for sure; his course should be part of your priority. Unexpectedly, the setting was different other than previous professors. He told us that education should not limit ourselves from exploring what the practice was all about. What happened, he let us experience what learning should be. The set up was we need to renovate our chosen site. With all the learning we learned from the knowledge of his class, the application must be shown on the site. After almost 2 months of designing and construction, we got to see the progress of our site. We were left in awe. Personally, It felt satisfying. Seeing our designs come to real life warms our heart. Was that part of what he was trying to tell us? Was that what he wanted us to know? | Above: Ar. Eric was looking on the final book of one of the groups who presented in Planning 1 subject. |
We entered his class unsure of what we were entering. After hearing the hearsay of his students back then, it left us lost wondering if we were really ready to the next encounter of becoming a third year student under his class. Next thing happened; he stood in front of us, with all of his firmness, speaking the entire task that we should finish. Second semester came and out of our surprise, he was our professor again in our Planning 1 course. But now, we felt relieved. We felt calm yet in awe knowing that the semester is going to be another pile of paper works. With all the 105 sketches, 9 blogs and 9 info graphics that we needed to submit, indeed, it was tough but this time we felt contented of what we did. All these activities required us that it should be part of our reflexes to sketch on a daily basis. We actually made a book that ranges from 300 to 400 pages as a compilation of what we did under his teachings. With his supervisions, we knew few of the theories that we needed to consider. We knew some of the requirements that we might use on our project. As the D-Day came, some of us were threatened as we needed to present our works and the panel on the said deliberation were architects professionally inclined and practicing the field of urban planning and architecture as well. It was our first time to be on hot seats and faced practicing architects. Intimidating it was but at the very glimpse, we are confident since we were advised by our professor. At the end, it was a success proving what we could actually contribute to planning concepts. Ar. Eric Samovar Baño has been part of our third level in college under the degree of Bachelor of Science in Architecture and with his supervision; we have became at our first stage of development that we had been seeking of. We were pushed into the limits; knowing that the limits were just barricaded walls of opportunities. With all these conclusions, one thing really captures our mind that we should never forget and that is DON’T FORGET THE BASICS. We tend to look complexity as the best state of everything but later on, we just get lost and confused. And the only way to get out of the confusion is to redeem ourselves and GO BACK TO BASIC. Archt. Baño taught us as designers and students as well, the most effective output comes from something you understood well and something that can be understood by other people as well at the very least effort they could do. With all the efforts that we made, we somehow saw a glimpse of what the actual field work actually looked like and we will continue to crave for this type of venture on our succeeding years. The experiences were tough but at the end of the year, it was all good.
